Neither method helps when you keep scrolling without a comparison in mind or keep changing the search before deciding what you need to find out.

A hybrid workflow that avoids tab overload
- Map for five minutes: use categories to learn the shape of the decision.
- Choose one subcategory: name the use case, size need, or specification that matters.
- Search one missing detail: query the exact question rather than the whole topic again.
- Return to three candidates: place search results beside comparable spreadsheet rows.
- Stop discovery: move to current destination checks and evidence review.
If the query merely repeats the broad category, it is likely to recreate the same noise in a different interface.
Turn vague intent into a useful query
Build the query from three parts: product type + use case + missing evidence.

Common failure modes
- Spreadsheet drift: opening categories outside the original mission because they happen to be visible.
- Search drift: changing queries repeatedly without recording what each version was meant to answer.
- Mixed comparison: combining results that solve different use cases.
- Tab hoarding: saving links without a reason, check date, or missing question.
- False completion: treating a clean result page as proof that the item or seller has been verified.
Keep a small research log
To avoid repeating the same searches, record the route rather than every result. Keep the category you started with, the exact query used, the date, the three candidates that survived, and the next unanswered question. One compact note is enough.
When a search produces no useful change, record that too. A failed query is valuable if it prevents you from running the same vague search again. When a spreadsheet category produces too many mixed rows, note the boundary you added—such as intended use, size range, material, or compatibility.
